Leadership fascinates me. Discovering how one person influences an organization through his or her decisions really cranks my tractor, as the saying goes.
For me, this curiosity started when I was asked to manage people in my first healthcare job. I thought a leader just set the direction of the business and then went and played golf. Needless to say, that first year as a manager was rough.
I continued to progress through healthcare management, eventually landing as a vice-president over leadership, performance management, and customer service of a large health system. By then, I figured out that effective leaders had a firm grasp on the connection between relationships and results.
My experience in these areas gave me insight on how leaders affect their entire organization—through their interaction with employees, other leaders, and the customer. Since leaders define how stuff gets done, they define the company culture.
And because company culture directly impacts the bottom line, leadership is crucial.
So crucial, in my opinion, that I started my own consulting business to help leaders at every stage of their journey increase their impact. I wrote two books, one for corporations and one for churches, on how the culture in the organization determines the success.
